Lunch at Market Salamander

Market Salamander can be found about an hour outside of DC in quaint and fabulous Middleburg.  The drive to Middleburg is worth the trip alone, but add in a stop at Market Salamander and you will have yourself a perfect day.

We started going to the market a few years back when we experienced our first snowy running of the foxhounds during the Middleburg Christmas Parade (also a must-do experience) and we have continued to find any excuse to make our way out there.

The shop is set up as part cafe and part market.  As a first-timer it can be slightly confusing, but when you walk in go to the right and you will be able to see the kitchen/counter area along with the menu on a chalkboard and be able to order from there.

Once you have placed your order take your ticket and hopefully you can snag a table.  Grab a pastry or brownie and get your drinks from the coffee counter or from the market area while you wait on your food to be prepared.

Also, unbeknownst to us the first time we visited, you can pay before or after you eat.

As far as food, their Grey Ghost sandwich is one of the top five things I have ever tasted.  It has grilled flank steak topped with caramelized onions, blue cheese, and arugula on ciabatta bread.   Now this is basically the only thing I order, but I have had their breakfast and a few other sandwiches too and everything is good and fresh.

Loudoun County is also known for its wineries so Market Salamander is a great mid-day stop between tours and tastings.
